I've been working with a number of different organizations on leadership this year. I find that leadership is often talked about, but is not given the depth of attention that it deserves. As John C. Maxwell said: The higher you want to climb, the more you need leadership. The greater the impact you want to make, the greater your influence needs to be.
My three survey questions are:
1. How do you define leadership?
2. Is leadership important to your organization? Why or Why not?
Well now, you could spend a lot of time thinking about those questions...but perhaps some simple answers are helpful as a kick start to some deeper thinking.
For me, leadership is the ability to get others to come with me, because they want to.
Leadership is vital to my organisation because without it we wouldn't have the courage to make difficult decisions. Managers manage situations, leaders control crisis.
I measure my leadership by the number of good people that want to come with me. I measure the leadership of others by whether or not I want to go with them....
